Steepest Cogwheel Railway in the World
The cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, with a gradient of 48%. Covering a distance of 4.6 kilometers, it climbs an altitude difference of 1,629 meters. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, passing through diverse landscapes, from blooming alpine meadows to striking rock formations.
Steepest Funicular Railway in the World
The funicular railway Schwyz–Stoos, known as the Stoosbahn, is the steepest funicular railway in the world. It connects Schlattli in Schwyz with the car-free mountain village of Stoos. Opened in 2017, the railway covers a distance of 1,740 meters, overcoming an altitude difference of 744 meters with a maximum gradient of 110% (47.7 degrees). Thanks to innovative technology and automatic cabin leveling, passengers always enjoy a horizontal standing surface during the 4- to 7-minute ride.
Longest Toboggan Run in Central Switzerland
The toboggan run from Melchsee-Frutt to Stöckalp is the longest in Central Switzerland, stretching 8 kilometers. Starting at 1,920 meters above sea level, the track descends nearly 1,000 meters in altitude. The ride offers thrilling sections and passes through idyllic forested areas, providing stunning views of the Melchtal Valley and Mount Pilatus. For thrill-seekers, night sledding is also available on Switzerland’s longest illuminated toboggan run.
First Mountain Railway in Europe
The Vitznau-Rigi Railway was inaugurated on May 21, 1871, making it the first cogwheel railway in Europe. It connects Vitznau on Lake Lucerne with Rigi Kulm, covering a distance of about seven kilometers and overcoming an altitude difference of roughly 1,300 meters. The Rigi Railway offers passengers impressive views of the Swiss Alps and surrounding lakes.
